Some people seem to think that bitcoins just magically appear out of thin air, but that's not actually the case. Bitcoins are created by a process called "mining". In short, miners are rewarded with bitcoins for verifying and committing transactions to the blockchain. But it's not as simple as just mining for bitcoins blindly. Miners need to use special software and hardware to solve complex mathematical problems in order to verify and commit transactions to the blockchain. And it's because of this complexity that miners are rewarded with new bitcoins every time they solve a problem. So, in a way, you could say that bitcoins are "created" through the efforts of miners.
